Steps and Sanctuary: The Simple Formula of ‘Magdasal at Magsikap’

In a world saturated with quick shortcuts, 30-day life hacks, and the relentless urge to display immediate success online, it is easy to overcomplicate how we build our lives. We often find ourselves searching for complex formulas to bridge the gap between where we stand today and the future we envision.

Recently, a simple reflection from Fr. Marvin’s Gabay Aral offered a grounding reminder of what truly matters:

“Darating ang time na mararating mo rin ang buhay na pinapangarap mo. Magdasal at magsikap ka lang.”

At first glance, it feels like familiar counsel we have heard since childhood. But when you unpack it against the realities of daily life, it reveals the foundational heartbeat of what this space—Steps & Sanctuary—is all about.

1. The Two Halves: Sanctuary and Steps

Notice the exact pairing: Magdasal and Magsikap.

  • Magdasal (The Sanctuary): Prayer is where we find our grounding. It is not a passive wish list presented to God; it is a quiet discipline of surrender, discernment, and alignment. Engaging with the daily Word and reflecting in the quiet corners of our parish shrines reminds us who we are, keeps our intentions pure, and guards us against pride when things go well and despair when they do not.

  • Magsikap (The Steps): Effort is the physical manifestation of our faith. It is showing up for the early morning routines, enduring the heavy commutes, putting in the hours at the gym, and refining our craft day in and day out.

Faith without action remains an unfulfilled dream; ambition without prayer risks losing its purpose entirely. The life we aspire to build requires both: the inner sanctuary of prayer and the intentional steps of hard work.

2. Trusting the Horizon: “Darating ang Time…”

The hardest part of any journey is the quiet middle—the unglamorous seasons where effort has been invested, but the breakthrough is not yet visible.

In our culture of instant gratification, delay is often mistaken for denial. Yet growth in character, spiritual maturity, and personal discipline takes time to mature. The phrase “darating ang time” is not an excuse for passivity; it is an invitation to patient endurance. It calls us to remain faithful in the small, daily responsibilities, trusting that God’s timing honors disciplined consistency.

3. Moving Forward with Clear Purpose

Every time we step out onto the pavement, sit down to write, or kneel in quiet reflection, we are actively participating in the journey toward our goals. You do not need to have the entire horizon mapped out today. You only need to honor the two things fully within your control:

  1. Keep praying—anchor your heart, seek wisdom, and surrender what lies beyond your reach.

  2. Keep striving—put in the work, honor your commitments, and take the next faithful step.

No matter what season of life you find yourself navigating right now, hold onto that steady truth. Stay grounded in prayer, stay committed to the grind, and keep walking forward.

Darating ang time. Magdasal at magsikap ka lang.
